GEF Council to review progress and consider new funding for high-impact initiatives
In its second-to-last gathering of its eighth funding cycle, the Global Environment Facility’s governing body will take stock of major progress towards current targets and consider a new tranche of financing for high-impact initiatives through the GEF Trust Fund, Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF), Special Climate Change Fund (SCCF), and Global Biodiversity Framework Fund (GBFF).

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) established its Financial Mechanism to facilitate the provision and transfer of resources from developed to developing countries. The Global Environment Facility (GEF) became the initial operating entity of the Financial Mechanism after the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the UNFCCC, and the GEF Council agreed to a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in 1996.

The Council of the Least Developed Countries Fund and the Special Climate Change Fund has approved almost $40 million in funding for new projects to boost resilience across Africa and the Pacific.

Bhutan secures $20M from Least Developed Countries Fund for a new urban resilience project
The Global Environment Facility Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF) has approved $20 million in grant funding for Bhutan’s new initiative, Enhancing Climate Resilience of Urban Landscapes and Communities in Thimphu-Paro Region (ECRUL). With co-financing commitments of more than $62 million from the Royal Government of Bhutan, the project seeks to tackle the growing climate challenges facing Bhutan’s key urban centers.
