GEF Council to review progress and consider new funding for high-impact initiatives
In its second-to-last gathering of its eighth funding cycle, the Global Environment Facility’s governing body will take stock of major progress towards current targets and consider a new tranche of financing for high-impact initiatives through the GEF Trust Fund, Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF), Special Climate Change Fund (SCCF), and Global Biodiversity Framework Fund (GBFF).

Indigenous stewardship and leadership at the heart of new project in Brazil
A new Global Biodiversity Framework Fund (GBFF) project was launched in Brazil to support Indigenous Peoples in their management and protection of their territories. The initiative, called Ywy Ipuranguete, aims to strengthen management in 15 Indigenous lands, totaling 6 million hectares distributed across the Amazon, Atlantic Forest, Cerrado, Caatinga, and Pantanal biomes. These territories are inhabited by 57,000 Indigenous persons and hold natural wealth essential for the country’s ecological balance.
GEF Council provides funding boost for pollution and other priorities, kicks off ninth replenishment
Representatives of 186 donor and recipient countries allocate nearly $700 million in financing focused on chemicals and waste management, and approve expansion of two flagship programs to increase support to Indigenous Peoples and local communities.Global Biodiversity Framework Fund (GBFF) project preparation grants to give boost to 17 countries, including nine Least Developed Countries and Small Island Developing States.
