In its second-to-last gathering of its eighth funding cycle, the Global Environment Facility’s governing body will take stock of major progress towards current targets and consider a new tranche of financing for high-impact initiatives through the GEF Trust Fund, Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF), Special Climate Change Fund (SCCF), and Global Biodiversity Framework Fund (GBFF). 

The Global Biodiversity Framework Fund (GBFF) of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) approved 22 new project preparation grants for projects in 34 countries worth over $87 million.

The second programming tranche of the Global Biodiversity Framework Fund (GBFF) will open on August 11, 2025, and make $161.8 million of additional resources available in a series of consecutive calls for proposals.Established in response to decisions from the Convention on Biological Diversity COP15, the GBFF scales up financing for the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. The fund was ratified by 186 countries and launched at the Seventh GEF Assembly in Vancouver, Canada in August 2023.

The Council of the Least Developed Countries Fund and the Special Climate Change Fund has approved almost $40 million in funding for new projects to boost resilience across Africa and the Pacific.

A wide-ranging Global Environment Facility work program approved on Monday will support a new “Lemur bond” for biodiversity and resilience in Madagascar; scale up efforts to remove mercury from skin creams and the production of non-ferrous metals and cement; strengthen cooperation across four international waterways; and connect microfinance with environmentally-focused ventures in developing countries.The $195 million allocated by the GEF Council will generate $2.6 billion from outside sources. That is equal to $13 mobilized for every GEF dollar.

Member countries to consider disbursing $261 million for innovative initiatives across the Global Environment Facility’s family of funds.Council meetings follow the official start of the GEF Trust Fund’s ninth replenishment process.

Member governments and partners of the Global Environment Facility met in Paris from May 20-21 to discuss priorities and ambitions for the multilateral trust fund’s next four-year funding cycle that will run from July 2026 to June 2030.The meetings brought together representatives of donor and recipient countries, civil society, and observers from the wider partnership, including implementing agencies, environmental conventions, and the private sector, to formally start discussions about the ninth replenishment cycle (GEF-9).
