Representatives of member governments and other GEF stakeholders gathered October 7-9, 2025, in Kasane, Botswana to review proposed plans for the multilateral trust fund in its ninth funding cycle for the 2026-2030 period.

Botswana’s Chobe National Park is more than a natural treasure—it’s a powerful engine for inclusive socioeconomic growth. Home to the world’s largest African elephant population and endangered species like the African wild dog. Chobe, being part of the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA) – the largest land-based transboundary conservation area in the world – is among ecosystems that are vital to biodiversity, tourism, and regional stability.

The Global Environment Facility Council has approved a $7.2 million project to deploy EarthRanger to support the management of 4.9 million hectares of terrestrial protected areas (PAs) in three African countries. The effort will help enhance real-time prevention and response to escalating threats of poaching, human-wildlife conflicts, and habitat loss.  

This publication provides an overview of initiatives under the GEF Small Grants Programme's (SGP) climate change portfolio which fall under the following thematic areas:

Under the 7th GEF replenishment, GEF-7, Impact Programs (IPs) on Food Systems, Land Use and Restoration (FOLUR); Sustainable Forest Management (SFM); and Sustainable Cities are being developed to address the drivers of environmental degradation, and to support transformational change in these key systems.

The 2016 GEF ECW for the Southern Africa Constituency will take place in Gaborone, Botswana, from 16 to 19 February 2016.
