The governments of Ecuador, India, Kenya, Lao PDR, Philippines, Uruguay, and Viet Nam have come together to launch a $379 million initiative to combat pollution from the use of pesticides and plastics in agriculture. 

Fifteen countries from across the Global South have united in the fight for a cleaner environment, with the approval of the largest global investment in tackling plastic pollution to date. With funding from the Global Environment Facility, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Cook Islands, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, India, Jordan, Laos, Morocco, Nigeria, Peru, Philippines, South Africa, and Senegal will collaborate to transition towards a circular economy for plastics under the $107 million program targeting single-use plastic packaging in the food and beverage industry.

The Government of Lao PDR is leading the way to ensure complementarity and coherence in its programming plans for the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF), two global climate funds and the operating entities of the financial mechanism of the UNFCCC. It is the first country to host a joint mission of GCF and GEF to support ambitious climate action in Lao PDR.

Partnerships in Environmental Management East Asia to foster and sustain healthy and for the Seas of East Asia, or PEMSEA, is an resilient oceans, coasts, communities and intergovernmental organization operating in economies across the region. For almost 25 years PEMSEA has supported its partners in achieving their sustainable development targets and a shared regional vision of Healthy Oceans, People and Economies.  

Hosted by the government of the Kingdom of Cambodia, the GEF Secretariat held this workshop with participants from five Asian Least Developed Countries (LDCs). In addition to the Kingdom of Cambodia, they included Bangladesh, Bhutan, Lao PDR, and Nepal. Invited participants from each country included GEF operational focal points, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) national focal points, climate adaptation experts from various government ministries and national institutions, in addition to civil society organization representatives.
