In its second-to-last gathering of its eighth funding cycle, the Global Environment Facility’s governing body will take stock of major progress towards current targets and consider a new tranche of financing for high-impact initiatives through the GEF Trust Fund, Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF), Special Climate Change Fund (SCCF), and Global Biodiversity Framework Fund (GBFF). 

VANCOUVER – The Global Environment Facility has selected 23 civil society organizations as winners of its Inclusive GEF Assembly Challenge Program, a novel initiative reflecting a commitment to support and elevate community-driven climate and nature projects and the unique contributions of Indigenous Peoples, women, girls, and young people across the GEF partnership.

Civil society organizations play an irreplaceable role in shaping environmental policy and outcomes, and are critically important to global efforts to address climate change, chemical pollution, biodiversity loss, and more.

Mirna Inés Fernández Pradel is a member of the Global Youth Biodiversity Network (GYBN), an international network of young people focused on preventing biodiversity loss and protecting nature. In an interview, she shared lessons from her work to elevate youth voices internationally and expressed her hopes for the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) COP15 summit in Montreal. Why is youth engagement around biodiversity important to you?

The Global Environment Facility’s member governments, meeting on its 30th anniversary, approved new funding to keep advancing international conservation priorities through the pandemic and to bring 2030 goals within closer reach.
